Game on

Paralympic Games begin in Paris

The Summer Paralympic Games get underway in Paris today. Over 4,000 athletes with a range of disabilities from all around the world will meet in the French capital to compete across 549 different events. For its first time hosting the Summer Paralympics, the city has got something special in store for the opening ceremony. Delegations from 184 nations will parade down the iconic Champs-Élysées to the Place de la Concorde, rather than entering a stadium. The first official Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960. Twenty-three nations took part, competing in eight sports, including wheelchair basketball and Para athletics.

Today's image takes us to an icon of Parisian life: the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in the Montmartre neighborhood. The church, which was completed in 1914, stands at the top of one of the highest points in Paris. It offers impressive views over the city, taking in the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Panthéon, and much more. If you're in Paris to enjoy the Paralympics, it's the perfect spot to soak up the beauty of the host city.

Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to this eco-friendly Pacific paradise, halfway between Hawaii and American Samoa. The Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2001 to conserve, manage, and restore fish, wildlife, plants, and habitats.

Home to a vast reef system, this atoll has three shallow lagoons, and numerous sandy and reef-rock islets with vegetation like coconut palms, Scaevola, and towering Pisonia trees. The lush greenery here is a bustling neighborhood that is home to over a million birds, including the masked booby, great frigatebird, and sooty tern. It is also one of the few places outside the Galápagos Islands where red-footed boobies are found. There is a huge variety of marine wildlife in and around the atoll, including green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, and the mighty coconut crab, the world's largest land invertebrate.

National Park Service Founders Day

Join us as we celebrate the American wilderness on National Park Service Founders Day, celebrating the visionaries behind the NPS. This organization was established by President Woodrow Wilson on August 25, 1916, to conserve wildlife, natural landscapes, and historical artifacts. You can celebrate by visiting one of our national parks, monuments, or protected areas and learn more about their history.

If you're in Montana, you can explore Glacier National Park, established in 1910. Glacier has more than 700 lakes, two mountain ranges, and vast forests teeming with life, which earned it the moniker 'Crown of the Continent.' With its 25 glaciers, it is studied by scientists monitoring climate change. Spread across approximately 1,013,000 acres, the park protects animals such as grizzly bears, moose, elks, and mountain goats. It is also home to the Going-to-the-Sun Road, over 700 miles of trails, and the awe-inspiring vistas of Swiftcurrent Lake, seen in today's image.

All about the woods and waters

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument anniversary

Welcome to Katahdin, where dense woodlands and pristine waterways stretch out as far as the eye can see. Covering nearly 87,500 acres, this new national monument was established eight years ago today. Maine's logging industry was a big part of this region for over a hundred years but declined toward the end of the 19th century. Efforts to preserve its landscape were spearheaded by philanthropist Roxanne Quimby. She started buying land near Baxter State Park in 2001 and donated it to the federal government in 2016, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Katahdin Woods and Waters' diverse ecosystem is home to many animals, including moose, black bear, Canada lynx, and bald eagles. Hiking, canoeing, and camping are among popular activities, and it has some of the darkest skies in the country, making it a great place for stargazing.

Doorway to the past

Prasat Phanom Rung temple ruins, Thailand

Today, let us step into the Phanom Rung Historical Park in Buriram province, Thailand. Here, Khmer architecture and history come to life. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, this remarkable site served as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. It is on the rim of an extinct volcano, offering views of the surrounding paddy fields and the towering Dongrek Mountains of Cambodia in the distance.

With its earthen terraces, the 500-foot promenade leading up to the main gate is one of the most striking features in the park. A long passage lined with sandstone pillars, it leads to the first of three bridges symbolizing the transition from the mortal realm to the divine. At the top, the shrine showcases a wealth of religious motifs, including Hindu sculptures. The annual festival of Phanom Rung, held in April, attracts many who gather to witness the sun's rays aligning with the 15 doorways of the temple and lighting up the inner sanctum.

Where the deer and the antelope play

Sunrise at Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Mind-blowing beauty is one reason people keep coming back to Wyoming and the Grand Teton National Park. Named 'les trois tétons' by early French trappers, the park was created in 1929 by conservationists including John D. Rockefeller Jr. It is home to a virtually untouched ecosystem of plants and animals, such as grizzly bears, wolves, bison, moose, and bald eagles.

Just 10 miles south of Yellowstone National Park, the park's 40-mile-long Teton Range is one of North America's youngest mountain ranges. At less than 10 million years old, erosion has not yet had time to smooth the edges of the mountains, hence the Tetons' jagged peaks. Many of the park's lakes, including 15-mile-long Jackson Lake, were carved out by glaciers hundreds of thousands of years ago. Towering over Jackson Hole and reflected in one of its many lakes, the Tetons and the park are a breathtaking sight to behold.

Pier today ...

Huntington Beach Pier, California, at sunset

In today's image, we see the sun disappearing below the pier at Huntington Beach, California. First built in 1902, the pier was damaged by a storm and had to be rebuilt just nine years later. During World War II, a submarine lookout post was installed on the pier to help with the war effort. These days, it's a popular spot for fishing and watching surfers ride the waves out in the Pacific Ocean.

Huntington Beach has been nicknamed Surf City, and it's not hard to see why. Its 9.5-mile-long sandy beach gets great waves all year round. And it is home to the International Surf Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the sport and see historic surfboards. Whether you're hitting the waves or watching from the pier, Huntington Beach is a peerless destination.

Where is this lighthouse?

International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend

The lighthouse featured in today's image stands in southern Portugal's popular Algarve region. Built in 1919, Alfanzina Lighthouse helps ships navigate dangerous waters near the town of Carvoeiro. A popular tourist destination, the lighthouse also has become a symbol of the region's deep links to the sea. If you're lucky enough to live near a lighthouse, this weekend is the perfect time to pay it a visit.

Today marks the start of International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, celebrating this vital maritime infrastructure. Originally, lighthouses were powered by fires and oil lamps, requiring lighthouse keepers to maintain them. These days, however, most lighthouses have been automated and installed with electric light sources. In waters that are too deep or otherwise unsuitable to build a lighthouse, lightships—moored vessels outfitted with beacon lights—have often been used.
