In the heart of the wilderness, an awe-inspiring sight plummets from a mountain—the Churún Merú waterfall in Venezuela. Also known as Dragon Falls, the cascade featured in today's image is in a narrow niche at the southern end of the canyon that divides the mountain of Auyán-tepui. Falling from around 1,300 feet, Churún Merú is joined by a neighboring stream in the wet season. Venezuela is home to some of the world's most impressive natural wonders, including the highest waterfall on Earth, Angel Falls, found some 4 miles south of Churún Merú. They use their specialized beaks to filter algae near the water's surface and are often found in African soda lakes like Lake Magadi, which are brimming with cyanobacteria and algae for them to eat. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, this sand bar is a popular destination with tourists looking to soak up the sun's rays on its white sands. Plentiful marine life here creates a vibrant underwater world that is perfect for snorkeling. The islands of Tanzania are home to an array of wildlife like the Pemba scops owl and the African fish eagle. To the north of Nakupenda, there is a giant tortoise sanctuary on Changuu Island, while their sea turtle cousins swim in the surrounding waters.

World Reef Awareness Day

The Great Barrier Reef runs for 1,430 miles along Australia's northeastern coast, providing a home for thousands of species, including more than 1,500 types of fish. Here, you'll find whales, dolphins, turtles, sharks, dugongs, and algae, all living together in a delicate ecosystem that relies on the coral reef. Sadly, climate change and pollution threaten this iconic site, the largest reef in the world. On June 1, we observe World Reef Awareness Day to remind people of the importance of safeguarding coral reefs, which provide food and shelter for about 25% of all marine life, to maintain the balance of nature.

The Yuanyang rice terraces are a sight to behold and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the Yunnan province in China, these spectacular terraced fields cover an area of more than 65 square miles and are more than 1,300 years old. The rice fields are carved along the original contour lines of the mountains, and their beautiful hues, eye-catching landscape, and gigantic size make them a marvel to look at and photograph. Nestled away from the ruckus of the city, Yuanyang County gives visitors a relaxing and tranquil setting to enjoy. The centuries-old culture of the indigenous Hani people is still very visible in this quiet space: Colorful outfits, traditional houses, and buffaloes working the fields complete the picture.
