Reflected glory of the Lakes
Natural lakes reflect surrounding mountains, fells and forests here in Cumbria's Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose picturesque landscape has inspired writers from William Wordsworth to Beatrix Potter. Crummock Water and its neighbours, Buttermere and Loweswater sit in one of the prettiest parts of the Northern Lakes, the Vale of Lorton. Their chilly, clear waters make them an ideal home for the Arctic Charr as well as brown trout, sea trout and salmon. Also look out for Lakeland sheep wandering onto the roads and for red squirrels around Loweswater.
The Lake District gets busy during the summer, but Crummock Water is considered one of the quieter lakes. It is a favourite with swimmers however and going for a dip is a popular way to cool off after a walk around its shores. The lake itself is 2.5 miles long, about half-a-mile wide and, in parts, more than 140 feet deep. It's fed by streams, including one from Scale Force, the Lake District's tallest single-drop waterfall, at 170 feet high.

Sandcastles and sailing boats
Now here's a location to add to your bucket (and spade) list. Tucked away on the south coast of Devon, Salcombe is one of England's iconic seaside towns, renowned for its picture-postcard harbour, sun-soaked beaches, rolling hills and breathtaking coastal views. With its estuary location, Salcombe is also a paradise for water sports and famous sailing destination. If you want to keep your feet dry, there are plenty of independent shops to browse and beachside cafes to visit, where you can sit back and relax with a delightful Devon cream tea, a speciality in this part of the world. At this time of year, the town's atmosphere is buzzing as the winter population of about 2,000 swells to more than 10 times that amount in summer months, when tourists flock here for the fairs, regattas and festivals. You might even spot a famous face or two – Salcombe's celebrity residents include the likes of Kate Bush and members of Led Zeppelin.

Glendurgan Garden hedge maze is 186 years old
Created by Alfred Fox in 1833 to entertain his 12 children, the cherry laurel hedge maze at Glendurgan Garden was designed to resemble a serpent curled in grass. In addition to the maze, Glendurgan also includes an amazing collection of exotic plants that Fox obtained on his travels and imported from abroad. Luckily, the temperate climate of Cornwall allowed these rare imports, like bamboo, Brazilian giant rhubarb, and tree ferns to thrive in this valley garden. In 1962, the Fox family gifted the gardens to the National Trust, a UK charity that works to preserve places of historic interest or natural beauty.
