Long live the trees

Happy International Day of Forests!

March 21 marks the International Day of Forests, a global observance aimed at celebrating the vital role forests play in supporting biodiversity and combating climate change. First established by the United Nations in 2013, this day encourages worldwide efforts, such as tree-planting campaigns, to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees for future generations.

One of the most breathtaking places to observe the richness of forests is the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Sabah on the Malaysian island of Borneo, starring in today's image. This 169-square-mile sanctuary is home to an ancient rainforest, teeming with rare species like Bornean orangutans, clouded leopards, and over 270 bird species. In addition to its incredible biodiversity, the Danum Valley is also a haven for researchers, with long-term studies monitoring its ecosystem and wildlife to aid conservation efforts. As we celebrate the International Day of Forests, let's remember that protecting our trees is essential for preserving our planet's health. Take a moment to appreciate nature's beauty and support efforts to safeguard our forests for generations to come.

A brew-tea-ful day

International Tea Day

There's nothing quite like a nice cup of tea. Whether you like Darjeeling, Earl Grey, oolong, matcha, or English breakfast, today's the day to celebrate this beloved brew: May 21 is International Tea Day. People have been drinking tea for at least 5,000 years. The drink originated in China, but in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was introduced to Western merchants, who helped to spread it around the world. It is now the second-most consumed drink in the world after water.

Today's photo takes us to Malaysia and the tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands. Located around 120 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands' cooler climate and high altitude make it perfect for tea growing. The area is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors stunning landscapes to explore, including rolling hills, towering mountains, and an ancient cloud forest.

A pair of high achievers

Skyscraper Day

The Petronas Twin Towers are the unmistakable calling card of the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur, affectionately called KL. The 88-story, 1,483-foot cylindrical towers were the tallest buildings in the world when they were completed in 1998, until 2004 when Taiwan's Taipei 101 topped them by almost 200 feet. Still the tallest twin skyscrapers in the world, they're our perfect inspiration today on Skyscraper Day, set aside to appreciate such engineering and architectural feats.

The Petronas Towers, named for Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company, were designed by the late Argentine-American architect Cesar Pelli, who incorporated motifs of Islamic art into his postmodern design. It remains his masterpiece, and a true standout in a country and continent full of skyscrapers. One of the most unique features of the towers can be seen here: a two-level skybridge that connects the towers at the 41st and 42nd floors. The bridge is not actually anchored to the main structure, but freely slides into each tower to accommodate any swaying caused by wind.

The preponderance of supertall structures in Asia isn't a coincidence. Skyscrapers spring up where populations are high, land is in short supply, and economies flourish. Plus, for an up-and-coming city, nothing says you've arrived like a gleaming skyscraper—or a pair of them. And why stop there? Even the Petronas Towers, though emblematic of the KL skyline, are no longer the tallest kid on the block in Malaysia with the arrival of 2,227-foot Merdeka 118, completed this year as the second-highest building in the world.
